What to Do When Moving Out of State

Moving out of state is primarily about preparation: you need to make sure the life behind you is completely settled and done with, and the new home you’re moving into will be ready for you when you get there. Turn on electricity, water, and phone lines early, and decide whether you’re going to fly or drive there.

Decide Whether You’re Going to Fly or Drive

This only really applies to those who hire movers to transport their belongings and don’t own a car, but choosing whether to drive cross country or fly is a big decision. Both approaches have their pros and cons.

Driving is often cheaper, but always takes longer, and can be an unnecessary source of stress during an already stressful time. Flying is the opposite: convenient, but expensive.

Either way, it’s important to be sure the movers you’re using have everything packed and are already on the road by the time you leave. Doubling back because of a minor detail the movers can’t handle is frustrating, to say the least.

Register at the DMV

It’s a safe bet to say that most of us cringe at the thought of going to the DMV, but when moving to a new state it’s something you’re going to have to do. The longer you put it off the more problems are going to crop up: different states have different time limits within which you need to apply for a new license after establishing residency. And a lot of the things you need from the DMV spend at least a week in the mail before getting to you.

What do you need when taking up residence in a new state? A new driver’s license is the most obvious, but you’ll also need a new license plate for your car and to update your address with the motor vehicle agency of both your old and new state. Some states require you to surrender your former license plate after obtaining a new one.

Even if you don’t drive, you should still apply for an identification card and register to vote. Having a photo ID can save you a mountain of headaches in the future.
