Moving isn’t everyone’s favorite activity, but it’s a necessary part of life and usually has a positive outcome! Between packing, scheduling a mover, changing your address, changing your daily go-tos, and more, it is no small task. To makes things a bit easier and a little less complicated, we’ve compiled a checklist of everything you need to know and do to prepare for a move — big or small!
Forward Your Mail
To avoid getting your mail sent to your old address, you can get your mail forwarded to your new address while you’re in the process of changing over all of your accounts to the new address. To do this, simply go to the USPS moving page and enter your new and old address, the date of your move, and how long you want your mail to forward to that location for. This allows you a grace period to get everything in order and adjust your account information.
Change Your Address
It’s best to avoid the headache of getting your credit cards declined because you forgot to change your address. While you can have USPS forward your mail, there are some things that you want to be changed right away. Do yourself a favor and get in contact with your bank, insurance company, place of employment, voter registration office, and anywhere else that will send you private information. Make sure to let them know the date of the move and the address so they won’t send any of your private information to your old address after you move or your new address before you move!
Find Your Doctors
Before you move, start researching doctors in the area. If you know that you are prone to any ailments, such as ingrown toenails or rashes, make sure you have a name and a number of the appropriate specialist, like a podiatrist or dermatologist, before you move. Even if you don’t have any specific health issues that need extra consideration, you should still research and get a name of the basics, like a general practitioner and the nearest emergency room. There is nothing worse than getting sick and not knowing where to go, or accidentally cutting your hand while unpacking and needing to research a place to get stitches while you’re in pain.
Find your general practitioner, dentist, and any other specialty doctors that you may use and make sure they take your insurance. This way, when the time comes for your checkup, you aren’t scrambling to find a doctor that accepts your insurance and that you actually like.
Cancel Your Utilities Account
In order to avoid getting charged for electricity in a home you’re not living in, it’s important to call your electric and other utility companies and alert them of your upcoming move. Simply tell them the date that you want them to turn the service off and that’s it!
